Marie, Josh, and me on the beach, Summer 2010

Two years ago I spent the summer living in Sag Harbor, NY to get out of the hot, smelly city.

One of the highlights of the summer was spending a ton of time at yoga, at the beach, and just plain hanging out with my friends Josh Pais and Marie Forleo.

Marie was in the middle of launching round two of a course I mentioned on Wednesday called B-School (stands for business school.) I got the blessed chance to absorb some of the mechanics behind the scenes of her seven-figure online business just by osmosis. It was awesome.

You see, Marie is a business genius. I don’t just say this because I love her and she’s my friend, though both of these things are true. I say this because every time I come to her with a business pickle she responds with golden nuggets, each of them worth thousands.

For example: The other day I had my panties in a wrinkle trying to fine tune a tagline for my new website (due to launch in a few weeks!) Her advice: a simple change in the order of the words that changed the impact of the copy immensely.

Lesson I learned: Make sure you put the words you want most emphasized first. Don’t put them last. Don’t put them in the middle. Put them right up front.

And this lessons is just one example from the treasure trove of Marie-Forleo-widom-land.

Elegance. Strategy. Heart. Proven business methods that work to make people tons of money while helping tons of people, too.

Why is this combination SO profoundly powerful when it comes to building a business that you love and that pays you well?

This is something I’ve been having a lot of trouble with lately. Has boiling who you are into a few words or a catch phrase every seemed daunting or completely inorganic to you like it does to me?

Recently I’ve felt torn. I’ve got this book coming out with Hay House in September called Money: A Love Story. I love teaching women about creating financial freedom. I love inspiring everyone to embrace their value so they can earn more and be of higher service in the world.

Yet I’ve co-created a team of over 3,000 wellness entrepreneurs called Team Northrup and our primary focus has been on health. I’ve taken every certification for teaching fitness under the sun (step aerobics, Nia, IntenSati, yoga, you name it.) I was raised by two physicians in a vegan macrobiotic household. I’ve read hundreds of nutrition books and tried bazillions of nutrition and fitness programs.

The innate wisdom of my body has always been my guiding compass. And taking optimal care of her has always been a top priority.

I’ve been asked to speak on health topics a lot lately. As I teach low-glycemic eating, why we need to supplement, and how to live an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, I feel lit up. I feel energized. I get freaking excited.

I’ve been asking myself how to best channel this passion in a bigger way than small local workshops or one on one consultations (which I still adore and will continue to do). I want to be of service on a wider scale. I want to help people feel damn good in their skin. I want to inspire women to live fully in the physical vessels they were given.

Teaching and practicing health, self care, and body love has been a huge part of my business life behind the scenes for the past twelve years. But I’ve been struggling with how to incorporate it in my online life in a way that makes sense.

A few weeks ago a solution emerged:

This new project is about the intersection between self love and healthy choices. It’s also about learning to listen to and respect our innate body wisdom.

I don’t like the fact that our culture puts so much emphasis on weight loss and how we look anymore than you do. I’ve found that when we focus on feeling good instead, everything shifts.

I’ve been craving a place where change is inspired through love for our bodies and ourselves instead of from a place of hating how we look. I’ve been craving a place to share what I’ve learned on my own body love journey (which is very much ongoing.) I’ve been craving a place to teach women how to tap into the wisdom of their bodies.

So I decided to create this place.

I was blessed to meet Ophira (aka Ophi) Edut in the live Fire Starter Session we attended back in the day when Danielle LaPorte was still doing these small, intimate gatherings. Is it possible to OD on personal growth?

I answered with a resounding: YES! TOTALLY!

Here’s the thing: We all have everything we need within us right this second.

You don’t need another course…
You don’t need a coach…
You don’t need to read another book…
You don’t need more information…
Or more insight…
Or another practice…
Or philosophy..

…to tap into the brilliance of who you are.

You have that in you already. It’s just a matter of remembering.

Here’s the truth:

I spent 6 months this year being coached by the brilliant Chela Davison. I’ve read at least 10 “grow yourself” books, as my friend Josh calls them, since January. I just spent 5 weeks with Dyana Valentine shining my manuscript and my psyche before sending it off to my editor. I attended 4 personal development oriented events just in July and August alone. Many of my closest friends are actually professionals in the personal growth industry so I barely go a day without chewing on the possibility of optimizing the human experience.

But the other morning I awoke really early and a strong voice within me said: ENOUGH.

I had signed up for another series of coaching and my body was giving me a clear signal in the form of a knot in my stomach that I’m currently full up on personal growth.

Sometimes we just need to chill and integrate. Sometimes the biggest life lessons will come over ice cream with your 3 year old instead of at a weekend retreat with the guru of the hour. And sometimes you don’t need a lesson. You just have to be.

There’s infinite information, insight, and wisdom on the planet. We were all given God’s direct line. Some of us have simply forgotten where we wrote it down.

I write this post with a sense of irony given the fact that I happen to work in the personal growth industry. So I’m not telling you not to buy any more personal growth books or take any more workshops. (I would be SUCH a hypocrite if I did.)

Do I believe in the work that I do in the world? Hell yeah. Will I keep attending seminars, searching my soul, going on retreats, and listening to others for wisdom and insight? You bet your bippy.

But today I wanted to remind you that sometimes you get full. Sometimes you’ve had enough. Sometimes you need a little time and space to digest what you already have learned from without and from within.

If I honestly put into action even 5% of the material I’ve learned from books and seminars that I’ve not yet implemented, my life would be revolutionized. And if I went within and asked my soul more questions instead of looking for answers outside I would probably spontaneously combust from unleashing the spark of divinity cooking away in there at all times.

And I know you would to.

Take a break from time to time. Be un-coached for a while. Let the fields of self-actualization lie fallow for a season. Ask yourself what you think instead of your girlfriend or guru. Read a novel for a change.

And then the next time you walk into a seminar, take a course, or open a personal growth book, you’ll be coming from a place of fullness instead of emptiness. You’ll not be looking for the missing piece of information to complete you. Instead you’ll be browsing for the cherry on top of your already incredibly dense, deep, sweet, wise cake of self-assurance and personal knowing.

So my reminder to you today is this:

It is possible to over dose on personal growth.
Take a break from growing every now and then, at least from growing in any sort of focused, purposeful way.
You already have everything within you that you need.
You are full already. You came in that way. You are lacking in nothing.
